George Washington said in his farewell address a lot about the baneful effects of political parties. The fundamental flaw in the Constitution is that there were no political parties when it was written. There were factions (federalists and anti-federalists), but they weren't parties like now. There weren't huge amounts of money being spent on strategists and things like that. They probably didn't feel a need to put those protections in the Constitution. Had they done it, I think the outcome would have been entirely different.
