Certification is useful for young and new consultants. First many newer and younger consults may be working with "industry grant schemes' that may have certification requirements.
If you are promoting through associations, they may also screen work is able to promote through them.
Likewise Major companies may have standard screening processes for consultant selection.
Of course one would not require this if you are a recognized expert on a subject. However building recognition and reputation is never easy.
Certification may be the best route for the newcomer.
Of course it cannot be solely relied upon. Newcomers will always have to work work hard in all directions...get certified, build reputation and real relationships, develop and learn to deliver powerful content, and deliver them effectively.
