Local Public Domain: Treasures in Your Own Backyard

Sometimes we get so involved online with our searches for public domain material that we overlook the treasures right under our noses. Did you know that mountains of public domain material exist right in your own neighborhood?

Take a trip to your local library and ask the reference librarian if you can search the old newspapers or any old work they might have on microfiche. Some of the very best material for your websites and blogs may come from antique town newspapers. In the US, you'll want to use those that were published prior to 1923.

Check out your town or county courthouse for more material that can be used, especially if you're compiling any product on genealogy. If your town has a museum, look there for some old material you could photograph and use. Some OCR software now allows you to take photos of text with a cell phone and scan it into a usable text file. So no worries if you can't actually take the material home with you to scan.

Public domain films offer the online entrepreneur new ways to monetize their current products, as well as provide a fast way to create new products. Whether you are looking for an entire movie to include as a bonus for an existing product or just a clip to change for marketing purposes, you have hundreds of clips and movies to choose from, all waiting in the public domain.

Uncovering the perfect public domain film for your product takes a little research. Archive.org may be the perfect site to visit first. They have thousands of clips available for download in numerous categories. You can also find motion pictures from the Library of Congress at loc.gov. Other United States government sites offer free videos, like nasa.gov. In fact, government and military sites are the perfect places to uncover non-fiction video that you can use for info-product creation.

Type in "free clip art" in a search engine, and you can come up with thousands of sites, some of which only point you to other sites and have no real clip art on them! Finding just what you need for a project can be frustrating!

Sharing well-chosen I love you quotes in a homemade card can mean much more to your loved one than an expensive store-bought card. You don't have to be an award winning writer to create a meaningful, heartfelt message either.

Poetry is the language of love. The only problem is that most of us are not poets. At best we can create a well used version of "Roses are red". If you are looking to wow your mate with some words of love, you are probably looking for the "I love you" quotes from some of the experts. Some of my favorites are "Grow old with me! The best is yet to." -- Robert Browning or "I've fallen in love many times. . . always with you" -- Author Unknown. There is nothing like some unexpected words of love and passion to spice up any relationship.
