Trip to Nashville

My husband Greg and I just spent a weekend in Nashville, TN relaxing on a belated 22nd wedding anniversary trip. Our anniversary is really in August, but August was so jam-packed we waited until this weekend to celebrate. We made a pit-stop in Franklin, TN on our way up to the Opryland Hotel and visited the famous Carnton Plantation. Technically, according to the guide, it wasn't really a plantation. Seems a plantation produces a single crop like cotton or sugar cane. Carnton was a large farm with multiple crops.

Carnton inspired Marcia Lynn McClure's book The Fragrance of Her Name and is the backdrop for the book The Widow of the South by Robert Hicks. I just love touring these 170+ year-old houses with their twelve-foot ceilings, antique furnishings and their historical drama.

After leaving the Carnton Plantation, we drove to Nashville where we stayed two nights at the Opryland Hotel. It's the largest hotel without a casino in it in the world.

It was a nice relaxing weekend of shopping, miniature golfing, enjoying the beautiful 4-acre hotel and just kicking back and taking it easy. Just the time-out we needed.

Faith Precedes the Miracle

I've created a Rejoice! group on FaceBook for those who are interested in discussing different aspects of the RejoiceIn2007 Christian coaching program. You'll need a Facebook account before it will let you join the group. But getting one is quick and painless. You can interact with other members through a discussion board and post comments or questions. I've also uploaded a few video clips and plan to add more in the future. I just need to get a new video camera since ours is not only antique but broken.

I have an appointment Tuesday to meet the lady from the Colonnade in Fort Oglethorpe to decide which size room I need to rent for the upcoming class on November 10th. If you think you might attend, go ahead and let me know so I can get a feel for the size room we'll need.

Here's an overview of the workshop:

"Faith Precedes the Miracle:
Develop Your Own Mountain-Moving Faith!"

Taught by Marnie L. Pehrson of RejoiceIn2007.com

What's Your  Mountain?

* Is it a mound of bills?
* Is it a precipice of loneliness?
* Is it a dream that seems continually just out of reach?
* Is it a spouse who’s betrayed you?
* Is it a health challenge?
* Is it a relationship that isn’t working?

"If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you."
- Matthew 17:20 KJV

* Is your life a frustrating cycle that keeps repeating?
* Do you continually encounter the same roadblocks?
* Are you tired of "wandering in the wilderness?" Are you ready to have the faith necessary to enter your promised land?
* Isn’t it time you learned the spiritual lesson within your challenges so you can move on?

This Workshop Holds the Keys!

Upcoming Events

I have several virtual and live events coming up:

Tomorrow (Thursday September 13th) I'll be leading a "meet-up" at Panera Bread on Battlefield Parkway in Fort Oglethorpe, GA for local Christians interested in studying the law of attraction. If you're interested in attending that, go here. I'll be hosting these on the 2nd Thursday of each month. So if you miss this one, maybe you can make the next one.

The 3rd week of October is the 8th Annual SheLovesGod.com Virtual Women's Conference. I'm lining up guests now. The theme for this year will be from Joshua 1:8: “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night; that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein; for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success."

This is a virtual conference - meaning you can listen to audios online and read articles related to the theme.

Also, I'm planning a live workshop for a Saturday in November. If I can book the Colonnade in Fort Oglethorpe, GA, I hope to hold it on Saturday the 10th... still waiting to hear back on availability.

The name of the class is Faith Precedes the Miracle: Developing Mountain-Moving Faith.. The workshop will be limited to about 30-40 participants so that we can work in an interactive environment - really applying the principles to your life and challenges. You'll be given tools/techniques and principles for building your faith and demystifying many of the trials of life. You'll learn God's laws, how He works, how to be sure you're on the right path, and how to deal with mountains that seemingly block that path.

I hope you'll join me! If you're interested, shoot me an email at marnie@marniepehrson.com . I'll have a registration page up shortly once I get the location nailed down.

What Makes a Hero or Heroine?

Every great historical romance needs a strong hero –- usually "lethally handsome" -- as my author-friend Marcia Lynn McClure would say. I tend to write heroes who are strong yet sensitive like Elijah in Angel and the Enemy who swoops in to save young Angelina from a fate worse than death. Or there’s mischievous Bronson Reilly from In Love We Trust who manages to convince heroine Mandy Gates that his amorous attentions are part of his protection of her. Then there’s Gerard McNally from Second Sight, a strong homicide detective who is sensitive enough to appreciate Sable’s intuitive abilities, protect her from danger, and also help her work through her dark past.

People ask me where I come up with my heroes. “Where can I find one of these guys?” women ask. “In my imagination,” is the answer. Basically, I take all my husband’s best qualities for the foundation and then fix all his flaws! LOL In other words, my heroes don’t exist in reality, only in my imagination! So reader beware … odds are you’re never going to find an Elijah, a Bronson or a Gerard.

What about heroines? Heroines are always a little more difficult for me, but they’re probably more realistic because I draw from my own flaws and foibles. Of all the heroines I’ve written the one everyone loves best is Dicey Langston – because she’s a real person. Young "Daring Dicey" saves an entire village, faces Bloody Scouts intent upon her destruction, and flings herself in front of her father to save his life. The great thing about Dicey is that she really did those things, and I think that’s why everyone loves her so much.

But Diceys don’t come along every day. Are heroines as difficult to come by in reality as heroes? While visiting a friend today, I realized that she’s probably one of the bravest women I know.  No, she hasn’t saved a village from certain destruction. She hasn’t faced pistols aimed to destroy her or her family. But she’s squaring off against an enemy every bit as threatening. What's more, she’s doing it with the faith of an angel and the optimism of a saint.

As I watch one of my dearest friends deal with breast cancer, I sit back in awe at her ability to recognize God’s hand in her life. Sure, she’s scared, but she’s at peace. “I know I can do this,” she told me. “The Lord is helping me through this.” She’s got a long hard road ahead of her, but she’s taking it one day at a time, keeping her sense of humor, and trusting God to get her through. If that’s not heroic, then I don’t know what is.
